WEBCAPE
INTRODUCTION & DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS
| INTRODUCTION:
Orange Coast College is pleased to offer WebCAPE (web-based computer-adaptive
placement exams) in three languages: French, German and Spanish. These tests are
designed
to help you determine which language course to take, based on your ability.
The exam presents questions of different levels, and adapts the questions according
to your answers. The number of questions is not fixed-- the exam will ask as many
(or few) as necessary to determine your ability. Note that the test will cover
both familiar and unfamiliar material, because the goal is to find out what you
do and do not know. Don't let this discourage you. If you aren't sure of
an answer, make your best guess and move on. The test is designed to give you
a number of opportunities to answer questions at different levels of skill. The
test eventually returns an "ability estimate value" and indicates the
corresponding recommended language level. | DISCLAIMER:
Please note that WebCAPE exams are designed for placement
and not achievement testing. Results should not be used as the basis for
waiving language requirements or granting credit without corroborating evidence
(like successful completion of an advanced class). | IMPORTANT:
Before beginning the exam, make sure that your web browser has JavaScript
turned on. | | INSTRUCTIONS:
| | 1.
| Go
to the following website: http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/?acct=occ
(clicking on the link will open the page in a new browser window). You'll see
the following: | | | |
| | 2. | In
the password field, enter "pirates1" (the word pirates with the
number 1, all as one word and without quotes); then, click on the "Login"
button. You'll see the following:
| | 3. | Choose
the appropriate language from the drop-down menu, and click on the "Begin" button.
You'll see the following:
| | 4. | Complete
the required fields (include your OCC student ID number, of you have one) as
well as the brief survey that follows about your past experiences with the
language. When you finish, click on the "Continue" button at the bottom, and begin
the test. You'll see a screen similar to the following (yours may be for French
or German): | | | |
| | 5.
| You
will see one question at a time, with instructions on how to answer it at the
top. Read the instructions carefully for each question. Note that the amount
of questions that you will have to answer is variable, as the program adapts to
your responses (click
here to learn more about how the test works).
| | 6. | After
you answer the last question, you'll see a page that includes information such
as your name, the length of time that it took for you to complete the exam, and,
most importantly, your score:
| | 7. |
At OCC, first semester (sem1) is 180; second semester (sem2) is 185; third semester
is 280; and fourth semester is 285. According to the sample results shown below,
Student 1 should definitely enroll in German 180. Student 2 should enroll in Spanish
180-- although s/he is pretty close to the cut-off of 281, and might consider
trying out 185 for more of a challenge. Student 2 should enroll in French 285.

but can always return to the site, log in, choose the appropriate language, and
then follow the instructions to view your previous results. Instructors at OCC
have access to your exam results, as well. |
